One of the last genuinely uncrowded coastlines on earth
Dhows on turquoise water, whale sharks off Tofo, dune-backed islands and a capital with the best seafood in Southern Africa.
When to go
April to October is dry, cooler and the most reliable window. November to March brings heat, humidity and rain, but also whale shark season in the south and the greenest landscapes of the year.
Getting around
Maputo, Vilankulo, Inhambane, Beira, Nampula and Pemba are the main gateways, with light aircraft transfers to island lodges. Self-driving is rewarding on main routes and demanding elsewhere.
Travel practicalities
Most visitors need a visa or an approved e-visa, malaria prophylaxis is advised in most regions, and the metical is the local currency with cards accepted in cities but cash essential on the coast.
